Guttering, or rain gutters, eaves, or rain troughs, is a narrow channel of vinyl or aluminum that is affixed to your house that divert rainwater runoff from your roof to the ground. The main purpose of a gutter is to protect a home's foundation by channeling water away from your home and into your yard. Gutters are also known from helping to prevent leaks in the basement, protect the exterior walls of your home, and reduce erosion.
Gutters are constructed from several materials, including vinyl, aluminum, galvanized steel, stainless steel, wood and copper. The most common materials used in today's gutters are vinyl and aluminum due to their inexpensive cost and ease of use. The material you choose for your guttering should depend on the climate in which you live and the availability of certain resources in your area.
Generally speaking, guttering can be installed by a do-it-yourselfer who is handy with a few hand tools and is willing to donate a weekend to the great outdoors on a ladder. Depending on the size of the job, the pitch of the roof, or the materials you choose to use, it might make sense to hire a professional to install your guttering. The main benefit to hiring a professional, not counting the time you don't have to spend doing it yourself, is the ability of the professional to manufacture and install continuous or seamless gutters. Due to the invention of cold forming technology, professional gutter installers can make long lengths of guttering at the jobsite for installation. This reduces the number of joints, or weak points, in your gutter and keeps degradation of the materials at bay.
As a homeowner, the most important thing you can do for your house is maintenance. A common problem with gutters is the accumulation of debris from leaves, tree limbs, and roof erosion, clogging the gutters and preventing the proper operation of the gutter. Standing water in gutters encourages plant growth, which will quickly degrade your gutters, as well as encourage mosquito breeding, which will degrade your summer outdoor experience. Water overflowing gutters also encouraging foundation damage and erosion. Screens and hoods can be installed to reduce this problem; though regular cleaning and maintenance is recommended to keep gutters in tiptop shape. To perform proper gutter maintenance, you must first remove all the solid debris manually. Follow this process up with washing the gutters down with a water hose or pressure washer. The process is complete when the water runs easily through the main channel and down the downspouts.
One aspect of gutter maintenance is recognizing the signs of worn gutters and knowing when to replace them. The guttering on a house will need to be replaced periodically as the material will eventually give way with its constant exposure to the elements. The major signs that your guttering may need to be replaced will include:
Rust Sagging Separated seams Defects in the material (holes, splits, etc.)
Rust Sagging Separated seams Defects in the material (holes, splits, etc.)
Your home's gutters, if properly maintained will extend the life of your home by many years. Don't neglect your gutters and inspect them at a minimum once a year.
