What You Should Know About Updating Kitchen Cabinets

by Matthew Kerridge

Replacing a kitchen is not the cheapest of tasks, far from it in fact, but if yours is looking a little tired and in need of TLC, there is an alternative. Often just as effective, and certainly more affordable is to update the kitchen cabinets.

It is more than likely that the structure of the cabinets themselves will be perfectly fine. However, time should be spent thoroughly checking and cleaning them. Any damage should present itself fairly easy and, in most cases should be easy to repair.

If there are any points for concern, replacing only panels in question will be the best course of action. This can be done quite cheaply through a local timber yard; or even with a piece of ply you may have to hand.

Having completed this, it is time to start really giving the cabinets a lift. Often, this can be achieved with nothing much more than a new coat or two of paint or varnish. To get ideas, take a look round kitchen showrooms, and match up paints you can get hold off easily and affordably.

If you aren't fancying a whole new paint job, or just want something a little less time consuming, applying self adhesive veneers could be an idea. Other self adhesive options are available too; such as moldings and other design features.

An excellent idea, whichever way you choose to proceed, is to add new handles. Some of these in themselves can be quite expensive, depending on the style chosen. However, this is certainly cheaper than a whole new kitchen of course; whilst there are excellent deals to be had from reclamation outlets and the like.

Possibly the best way to give kitchen cabinets a whole new look is through replacing the doors in their entirety. It is the doors that will be showing the most wear and tear anyway; so this just makes sense and can give years of further use.

Ensure that you have taken down all measurements correctly; checking them just to make sure. Having these, you can order the doors to be made, or see if any kitchen retailers have any surplus in stock you could get a deal on. And again, reclamation yards could come into their own.

If the doors on the kitchen cabinets themselves are fairly sound, an excellent alternative to replacing them is through the addition of glass paneling. With frosted, clear, or even cut options, a modern, contemporary or even traditional look can easily be achieved.
