Fireplace Designs: Choosing The Perfect One For Your Home

by John Hogan

When it's cold at night, the best place to hang around at home is the fireplace that provides comfort and warmth. You can have a relaxing time alone while sipping a hot drink and reading your favorite book. And what better way to celebrate special occasions like Thanksgiving and Christmas than inviting your friends over at home and having good time with them near the fireplace? You need not worry if your home is not equipped with a fireplace. In fact, it's possible to have a fireplace built inside or outside your home. And the better part of it is that you have the freedom to pick from the many fireplace designs out there that suit your preferences.

However, before doing so, you have to know first the fireplace type that matches your home's design. It's important because it helps you easily determine the perfect fireplace design. For instance, if your home has a contemporary design, building a brick fireplace would not be a good idea. Aside from that, you must also choose from electric, wood-burning, and gas fireplaces that assure safety and convenience at home.

One you have figured out the type of fireplace you're going to build, the next thing to do is to research on different fireplace designs from websites, magazines, and construction books. Can't come across a fireplace design that strikes you? Instead, you can customize the design of your fireplace so that it will look exactly as you wish.

The three basic components of fireplace designs that should be taken into consideration are fireplace openings, hearths, and fireboxes. These components are important as they influence your choice of fireplace design that blends well with your home's interior or exterior appearance and suits your taste.

There's a wide range of styles available for fireboxes, including dropped fireboxes and flushed fireboxes. The styles vary according to the measurement of fireboxes from the floor and hearth. Likewise, hearths come in various styles-they can be raised, sunk, or joined to the floor. Hearths may not be present in some fireplace designs, but they still are important. You can design your fireplace in such a way that seating blocks or hearth seats can be set up on one side of the firebox. This functional design is ideal for frequent family gatherings or bonding times between couples. The last factor of fireplace designs is the fireplace opening.

Among the elements of fireplace designs, the fireplace opening is the most visible section. Although it's usually rectangular, fireplace openings also come in different arch shapes. With the general theme of your home in mind, you can choose either a flat arch top fireplace opening or a full-arch opening. Corner fireplace openings and U-shaped openings can also be used as designs for fireplaces. If you know what fireplace design is perfect for your home, you can also readily determine the best size, materials, and other features that you're going to look for in a fireplace.
