Creating A Theme With Garden Lights

by Abel Brockman

Making a decision to create a garden that includes garden lights can be a little daunting. However with planning and patience one can create a home and garden that will look as magnificent during the night as it does during the day.

Deciding which areas in the garden should be highlighted when it is dark is the first step towards installing garden lights. An easy way to find out where the lights should be located around these areas is to take pictures from the angle that the lights will be installed. This is much easier than trying to move the lights and will allow an individual more flexibility in deciding how many lights to use in specific areas of the garden.

When selecting lights it is important that one include those lighting needs around the perimeter of the home. Many individuals have blind areas around their home that are completely dark at night. Using halogen lighting which connects to the electricity in the home can engulf a home in light when one desires to do so. In some cases these lights are attached to motion sensors that turn the lights on automatically when a figure crosses across the beam of the light. This security feature can also be added to other lights throughout the garden to make walking on pathways safer for guests.

In a region where the sun does not shine year round solar lights will work in areas that do not depend on light at night. One would not want to use solar lighting exclusively on a walk or pathway if the lights were not going to work effectively. However, most of the solar pathway lights are more affordable than low voltage lighting and one may want to consider distributing them evenly along a pathway so that there is always light available.

To create lighting throughout one's garden it will be easy to use a plot map containing the details of the structures and yard of the home. One can mark where they want lights to be placed and, if an electrical conduit will be installed, it is easy to draw the area for it's placement.

Most home accidents involve slipping and falling on pathways and steps. This can be very expensive and cause homeowner's insurance premiums to rise. By installing proper low voltage lights along pathways and steps in the garden and to the home one is reducing the danger of tripping, slipping, or falling. Low voltage lighting is very inexpensive to run and provides the amount of light that one needs to navigate pathways easily. There are also low voltage garden lights made specifically for steps which when in place are not noticeable until a person walking triggers a motion sensor which activates them.

Brighter up lights will go in those areas that you identified as focal points. These lights will shine up to enhance and highlight your focal point or create shadows of light around it. When installing these lights they provide the best effect when placed very close to low shrubbery out of sight. This also protects the lights so that a lawnmower or weed eater does not inadvertently damage them.

Replacing old porch lights with down lights creates a pool of light that welcomes guests. The down lights provide enough light that they are excellent in areas such as the patio where activities and entertaining will take place. These lights are designed to be used with wall switches, motion detectors, or timers so that an individual is not required to turn them on and off in those areas where one wants the lights to come on at dusk and turn off at dawn.

When a plan has been drawn and a person has figured out how big the task will be to install garden lights they may choose to call a professional for assistance. For large yards there may be the need to lay electrical conduit and test outlets which should always be done by someone knowledgeable and trained in this area. For the smaller garden one may want to begin the project themselves by purchasing the necessary kits to do a small part of the garden to see if it is something they feel comfortable doing.
