Nowadays we throw things away without thinking about it, but we like to keep our baby things. Even so, before you give birth, many people will be happy to donate unused nursery furniture and crib bedding. You will appreciate these offers of baby bedding and cribs since babies can cost a lot of money. Always make sure before you choose to use any bedding and crib for your child, that they are safe and won't harm your child.
Whatever you decide, a Moses basket or crib, the first bed belonging to your baby will no doubt be something special and a keepsake. While you are refinishing your used baby crib, take the time to make sure it will be safe for your baby. Look closely at the baby bedding and crib that you have received to make sure that they are safe, even if the appear to be new. If you plan on using a cradle made of wicker, there are a couple things to consider: First make sure the wood is in good condition and there aren't any loose or broken pieces and second check the condition of the mattress because many times this is the piece that needs to be replaced. While baby believes everything should go directly into the mouth, protect your infant by checking the skirt when fitting for loose threads or other choking hazards.
The drapes should be fixed properly. Loose materials might be caught by the child to put inside the mouth. Purchase new bedding for your crib if you are able to because the majority of organizations that are concerned about the safety of baby furniture, such as the Juvenile Products Manufacturer's Association (JPMA) in the United States and British Standards (BS) in the UK have advised consumers to purchase new furniture and bedding, if at all possible. The JPMA seal of approval or the BS 'Kite' mark are shown on products that have been safety tested and meet the requirements.
Secondhand items are perfectly reasonable as long as you're sure that the items are safe. It's always a good idea to recycle, even items like nursery furniture and baby bedding. There are several reviews you can do on cribs to make sure your baby is safe and happy, after all, the crib is where your baby will be spending most of their time. These are some important things to consider when you do your baby safety equipment check. Before anything else, you want to make sure there is no chipped, loose, or dangerous paint and no jagged edges that your baby's clothes will get caught on. Make sure you purchase a crib where the bars are extremely close together, (closer than 2 & 3/8 inches apart), and there are no holes anywhere, to protect your baby's head. To prevent the crib from wobbling, I would check all connections, screws and make sure that all the pieces are in place. Then go around the crib and double check again. You should be able to raise and lower the side rails with one hand and the rails must be secure when raised. The mattress should be at least 22 inches below the top of the rail, and the mattress should be clean, firm and made from good materials.
A new mattress that would fit in the crib is always better. Nursery bedding may cause babies to suffocate, so you have to be careful to tie the strings of the bumper tightly or don't use a bumper at all. Avoid duvets, quilts or sheepskin totally as they would overheat. Blankets and sheets with a good thermometer in the babies room will help assure comfort. The crib should not be next to lamps or window blinds, etc Babies grow quick and try to climb.
You can have a wonderful time with your baby that is growing fast.
